Ataraxie

Ataraxie : “Selon les épicuriens, le but de la philosophie – de la morale éclairée par la canonique et la physique – c’est d’aider les hommes à trouver le bonheur. Mais ce qu’ils appelaient bonheur, c’était avant tout la sérénité de l’âme. Il s’agit de réaliser un état intérieur de paix, de calme, que les épicuriens appelaient ataraxie”. L’étonnement philosophique, Jeanne Hersch, p. 73.

One of the tools I use to find my ataraxie is to be on, or in, the lake Léman. Being in contact with water helps me to reconnect with myself.

Seule Ensemble

Seule Ensemble (2024) explores the nature of intimate relationships in a liquid society, influenced by capitalism and marked by the incessant pursuit of desire and relational experiences. Drawing on Zygmunt Bauman’s theory and the philosophical reflections of Schopenhauer and Socrates, the artist questions how these fluid relationships shape our individuality and our relationship with the world. Through photography and painting, water becomes a central motif, embodying both the perpetual transformation of human connections and a space for contemplation and emotional healing.

In, out and in between

There’s what’s happening on the beach, what’s happening out there, and what’s in between.

I observe this scene of life, the comings and goings of the sea, the people… The ever-changing sand and sky…

With my camera, I move back and forth between the calm of the sea horizon and the hustle and bustle of the people on the beach. I keep my distance from the ‘Out’, plunge straight into the depths of the ‘In’ and discover the abysses of the ‘In Between’.

Sunset Colors

Luminograms inspired by the specials colors of sunset in Lisboa. Every day was a fabulous moment to observe the end of the day.

My intention was to bring together two natural and iconic elements present in my environment in Lisboa  : water and light.

Light was used for the analog printing process to create luminograms, and water too, but water from ocean. So salted water was added to the chemicals products to allowing a degree of non-control the final result.

A regard on the space where I grew up in the French countryside, and the space where I live now in Switzerland. I look for similarities. Are there really any?

Marlene Grand

Marlène Grand (1995, FR) is a Swiss-French visual artist based in Vevey. She graduated from the Vevey School of Photography (CEPV) in 2022. Since then, she has participated in artistic residencies in Portugal, France, and Italy. These immersive experiences have enriched her experimental practice.

Attentive to the environment around her, she collects natural materials to incorporate into her creative process. With an instinctive and experimental approach, Marlène Grand plays with the photographic medium and explores mixed media such as analog and digital processes, painting, and installation.

Her intention is to reveal a certain sensitivity to the living world, based on notions of materiality, place, temporality, and imprint. The aesthetic of her work is balanced between the abstract and the figurative.

She is a member of Espace Indiana, a cultural space dedicated to the visual arts in Vevey, where she has also her studio.
