Cynthia Mai Ammann

Cynthia Mai Ammann currently lives and works in Lausanne and California. She graduated from the Photography School of Vevey (CEPV) in 2016 and from ECAL in 2019. In 2020, she co-founded the artist-run space Galerie Strates, dedicated to emerging photography, with Arthur Lehmann and Romain Keller. Her work mainly reflects on notions of identity, belonging and memory with an approach that oscillates between fiction and documentary. In both her personal and commission work, she constructs her images with a particular attention to feelings and emotions such as nostalgia, warmth and hope.
Her series ‘Floating View’ offers an immersive journey through the shifting urban landscape of her mother’s hometown, Sài Gòn. Fragmented in multiple layers of representations, the images portray a young generation melting in the ever expanding urbanisation. As a fantasized and dystopian world collapse together, the series aim to reflect on the megacities of tomorrow through the process of rapid urbanisation.
